ABOUT US
Here for the people of Charlton: growing an inclusive, connected, and creative community where love is the foundation, faith is everyday, and everyone can belong.
Our Shared Life
We are here to:
-
Enjoy God: To worship is our delight, not duty. We gather to celebrate God's presence and goodness, through ritual and tradition but also through creative expression and spontaneity.
-
Love Courageously: Love is the foundation of all we do. We seek to love one another and our neighbours in a way that listens, risks, forgives and builds community.
-
Cultivate Beauty: In music, relationships, justice, and everyday choices – we seek what is good, true and beautiful. We encourage artistic expression as a vital part of the human story.
-
Live Faith: Faith isn’t confined to Sundays. It's something we carry into every part of life. We want to develop habits and rituals that foster spiritual health in everyday life.
-
Build Community : We need each other. We are committed to developing lasting relationships that are honest, caring, and rooted in shared life together. A community where everyone is welcome.
Charlton Church is:
-
An inclusive church: affirming and celebrating every person.
-
A creative church: using the arts to inspire, unite, and worship.
-
A caring church: supporting people, advocating for justice, and caring for creation.
-
A community church: helping people find purpose, friendship and belonging.
-
A local church: serving our local parishes in a variety of ways.
-
An everyday church: where faith extends beyond Sundays into all of life.
Our Beliefs
We hold to the historic creeds as the basis for what we believe but even these require some interpretation and explanation at times. So, this list is not a statement of faith but outlines some important things to give a flavour of our church:
-
We believe every person is made in God’s image – with dignity, creativity, connection, and worth. We welcome, embrace, and affirm every person without discrimination. We are all created in God’s image and all have a part to play, whoever we are and however God made us. Our desire is to be an inclusive church in Charlton where anyone can find a place to belong.
-
We are worshipping beings – shaped by what we love, moved by joy, pain, longing and hope. In a world where so many things ask for our love and loyalty, we are seeking to shape our lives on the self-giving love of Christ.
-
We are part of a bigger story – the unfolding, often messy story of God and humanity that is revealed in the scriptures and told through every culture.
-
Christ’s life, death and resurrection is the beauty that saves the world – the wonder of the gospel story is that the most painful and ugly death becomes a moment of beauty that shapes and transforms how we live in the world.
-
We practise hospitality and love – opening our tables, our hearts and our lives to others.
-
We are at peace with mystery and comfortable with doubt – not everything can be explained and when it comes to the divine there will always be things that are beyond the realms of our language and our understanding. This mystery is part of our faith. So too is the doubt and healthy scepticism which propels us on our search for truth.
-
We long for reconciliation – in ourselves, our relationships, our community and our planet.
-
We begin now – we’re not waiting for a better world. We want to live it now, together, in Charlton.
